Field Notes

Why Auckland-first is not always the right first move

Auckland concentrates head offices, freight gateways, and professional services. That makes it a convenient first office — and sometimes a misleading first market.

For categories where provincial buyers, South Island logistics, or government-adjacent procurement dominate early revenue, an Auckland showroom can absorb cash while the real demand sits elsewhere. We have seen specialty equipment firms learn more from a structured Christchurch pilot than from six months of Auckland networking dinners.

Before defaulting to Shortland Street or Viaduct leases, ask:

  1. Where do your first ten likely customers already buy similar goods or services?
  2. Does your category rely on distributors who are stronger outside Auckland?
  3. Will an Auckland address change how buyers trust you, or only how your team feels settled?

Market entry consulting worth paying for should be willing to recommend a quieter first footprint when the evidence points there.
